Becoming a Writer

My grade two spelling programme was very prescribed. Monday, we painfully printed the weekly list words from our Nelson speller into our notebooks. Because I was in the “Robin” reading group, I was also expected to write a sentence for at least five of the new words. Tuesday and Wednesday we completed exercises about the words, practicing rhyming schemes, pluralization, contractions or whatever else the people at Nelson publishing house thought was important for grade two students in the 1960’s.
But on Thursday I was set free.

The only instructions were to write a story. It was assumed we would incorporate the weekly list words into our tales, but Miss Skene was a wild child of the sixties and allowed me to write about whatever my imagination inspired. Thursdays were my favourite day of the week. I had no doubt one day I would publish a book.
57 years later I did.
I believe everyone has a story to tell.
For the last several years I have been finding ordinary people with extraordinary stories and telling them in a column in The Highlander, our local newspaper. My first book, Humans of Haliburton Highlands is a compilation of those stories.
Last week the books arrived. 75 copies of my first book. It is really happening; I am a published author.
Humans of Haliburton Highlands Book Launch
The official book launch for Humans of Haliburton Highlands is June 6th at the Corner Gallery in Haliburton. All are welcome. I look forward to celebrating with friends, family and the people celebrated within my book. If only Miss Skene could be there.
